awhile/ a while

Is it meant to be awhile or a while?

It takes me awhile/a while but I can manage to do it by myself.
Drawing a portrait is hard and takes me awhile/awhile.

I'm sure that evolution will soon result in its being one word (an + other ---> another), but for the time being, I believe it is still considered to be two words.
