Away from

1. My house is a fair distance (away) from here.

2. I live a fair distance (away) from here.

What difference does the "away" make to the above sentences, syntactically and semantically ?

How is it that we can omit "away" and still express the same idea as we do without "away" in the above sentences, whereas in the sentence " Our parents live some distance away", we cannot do without "away" ?

Because the latter sentence has no 'from here/Chicago/etc'.
