I incline to say no. When a noun is preceded by an adjective, whether this normally uncountable noun can be used with a/an depends on particular words themselves, and no rules can be found in dictionaries. I think if awareness is preceded by eg public, a/an is not used, but if an adjective describing the level of awareness, such as acute, is used, a/an is required. Do you agree?

I would accept that sentence both with and without the article. Most naturally I would include it.
