Avoiding repetition

Hi,

Example: He gave me a car, and he gave John a boat.

Can we avoid extra words and write: He gave me a car, and John a boat.

Is that fine?

Thanx.

No. There must be a comma to mark the omission: "He gave me a car, and John, a boat." If you are comma-shy, don't put it that way.
