Avoiding Cliches

We are told to avoid cliches, but this particular one I find to be the best, simplest way to convey what's to be said:

But this is easier than it sounds.

Do you have a preferred paraphrase or would you too use this cliche?

Sorry, I wrote down the wrong phrase: Emotion: embarrassed

Easier said than done is what I meant.

I wouldn't call it a cliche. This sort of fixed structure is a common, standard, and very ingrained part of all communication.

Sorry, but I'm not sure whether or not you are talking about my first, incorrect sentence, or the one I wrote in my seccond post. Could you please clarify?

I was speaking of the first. 'Easier said than done' I would call a fixed phrase; again, not a cliche. Cliches to me are utterances like 'American as apple pie' and 'between a rock and a hard place'.

I think I have an unhelpfully subjective definition of "cliché". To me, something is a "cliché" only when it gets on my nerves!

I think that's an excellent definition, Mr W. They are extremely hard to list, for one thing– and one man's cliche is another's mot juste.
