Avenge

Hi teachers,

The definition of avenge: To take vengeance on behalf of: avenged their wronged parents.

What is "avenged their wronged parents"? To punish the parents or to punish the person(s) who wronged their parents?

Thanks

To punish the person/people/entity who/which wronged their parents. Note that V7 has switched from square brackets to parentheses in building the codes for smileys. If you put a letter in parentheses, you'll probably get a smiley.

  • You can avoid the problem by putting a space on either side of the letter: ( s ).
  • ( a ) gives you an angel, if you don't use the spaces.

Hi Avangi,

Thanks for your information.

If "wronged" is taken out of context, so "to avenge their parents", does it tell you "to punish their parents"?

Thanks

Hello tinanam0102

Here is a more complete definition of the verb "to avenge" from the Oxford Dictionary. It may help you to understand the word, and its use, better.
  • To inflict harm in return for an injury or wrong done to oneself or another. Example: :His determination to avenge the murder of his brother obsessed him. The team are eager to avenge last year's defeat.

    Hi JohnParis,

Thanks for showing me the difference. I think I was just in time to finally understand the meaning. I was thinking and saying it in my own language so I didn't get it right the first time.

    Have a good day.
