Auxillary Verb Confusion

Hey all!

Basically tackling auxillary verbs atm for company grammar test and getting mightilty confused any help would be vastly appreciated. I am being given these two sentences as practice for the eventual test and can't work anything out. I'm meant to show the four auxillary verbs in order from each sentence, and to ignore main lexical verbs. Any guidance or help would be vastly appreciated.

Here are the sentences:

The next day Father said he was sorry that he had hit me and he didn't mean to. Then he said he was taking me on an expedition to show me that he was properly sorry and we were going to Twycross Zoo

If I had only known then what I know now I would never have been fooled into thinking he was a real doctor.

Again any help would be great!

Hi, and welcome to the forums. Why don't you start by putting all the verbs in bold. Then see if you can pick out which ones tell you about tense or something other than the main action.
