Auxiliary verbs

Hi. Is to be considered an auxiliary verb in progressive tenses or not?

What about passive sentences?

Ex. They were palying outside.

Ex. I was told the story.

Ex. He had been playing for ten hours.

Thanks

Thanks Clive.

So the only time To be is considered a main verb is when it is used before adjectives. Am I right?

Ex.He is nice.

Ex. He is a teacher.(the indefinite article a is considered an adjective here.)

Thanks

Hi,

I wouldn't say that.

How about these?

eg His hobby was dancing.

eg He is Tom Smith.

eg He is President of the United States.

eg It was him.
