Auxiliary verb "needn't"

I don't understand the difference between "needn't" and "don't need to". In what kind of sentences do you prefer the auxiliary verb "needn't"?

I think it is more a matter of personal or regional habit, I think. 'Need', like 'dare', simply has two forms available for use at this point in the history of the language.
