Auxiliary verb headache

I am have a really tough time distinguishing between auxiliary and main verbs in sentences, I wonder if someone can help me out!

I HAVE been to the swimming pool... I HAVE is auxiliary
I have DONE a lot of work today... DONE is the main verb
I HAD a great day yesterday... I HAD is the main verb
I DID everything I could to understand grammar... I DID is auxiliary
I AM doing everything I can to succeed... I AM is auxiliary

Is my understanding here correct? or have I really missed the concept?

Ok, that helps! If you take DID out of the sentence it does not really make much sense!

Thanks for the welcome!

If there's more than one verb in a sequence, all but the last are the auxiliaries, the last is the main verb. If there's only one, it's the main verb, and there is no auxiliary.

I HAVE been to the swimming pool... I HA
