Speech & Pronunciation

Australian accent and words ending in -age

Hi there! I'm a Greek English teacher and I was wondering if you could help me in a pronunciation problem I've encountered in one of my classes.

A student of mine insists that in Australian English words ending in -age, like cottage, luggage, advantage, language etc. are not pronounced /- ?d?/ but / -?d?/ or / -?d?/. She says that she has got Australian relatives and that's the way they pronounce them but I'm a bit sceptical.

I' m looking forward to your replies! Thanks in advance! Emotion: smile

That's an old post but let me answer your question. I asked abn Australian friend and I believe you are right and not your student. Maybe there is a /-a/ sound in orange for example but not in the words you mention.
