Aunt Hilda, as well as her pet dachshund, is coming to the party.

Hi friends,

Please have a look at the following sentence and let me know what is wrong in it.

I feel we should use are coming to the party and some people suggest 'is' is the correct for. Please clarify.

Aunt Hilda, as well as her pet dachshund, is coming to the party.

Hi Guest.

"is" is correct, because the subject is Aunt Hilda - singular

"Aunt Hilda is coming to the party, and her dog is coming also."

You would use "are" if the subject of the sentence was plural i.e. Aunt Hilda and her dog ARE coming to the party (They are coming)
