Auditorium

When the man and his wife returned to their seats in the dark auditorium after intermission he asked the fellow

seated in the aisle,"Did someone step on your foot a little while ago?"

"Yes, you did," he replied, expecting an apology.

"OK, honey," the man said to his wife,"this is our row."

I looked up the dictionary and found the word "auditorium" has two meanings.

1. the part of a theater, cinema etc where the audience sits

2. a large building used for concerts or public meetings

I think both of these two meanings can fit the context, but which one is better?

I've never heard definition 1 before. In my view there is no distinction between a theater and where the audience sits in the theater.

2 is the definition that would apply.
