audience/spectators

Audience/ spectators/crowd I have problem with audience and spectators. I believe crowd can be used to substitute for either. Please assign the right word to describe the following events.

car race
beauty pagent
Hot dog eating contest
Boxing match
Soccer game
parade
presidential campaign
basketball game
tennis match
fashion show
talk show

Thanks

I remember a pretty interesting thread on this subject a couple of months back. Maybe you (we) can find it. Either Clive or Philip did the Latin thing about looking and listening and we ended up that spectators were for sports and audiences were for concerts, theater and cinema - if I recall.

  • I see your list as taking only spectators.
  • I'm not sure what sort of venu you have in mind for the talk show or the presidential campaign I guess fashion show would be audience.

I was thinking of "Oprah" kind and Obama presidential campaign events where he gives speeches followed by QA sessions.

Do you know the title of the thread? I've been reading almost 80 to 90 percent of the treads on this forum for the past few months. It must have fallen in the 10-20 percent.

False alarm. I remembered it as a much longer thread. Turns out it was just me shooting my mouth off. Philip raised the sound vs sight idea.

Thanks a lot, Avangi. It was a good thread indeed. But associating a beauty pagent with spectators doesn't sound so right to me. Is it OK with you?

I agree completely. But some of 'em are pretty grungy - remind me of the old burlesque houses. (You didn't include those in your listing.)

I would use spectators for all of the above

fashion show
talk show

I would use audience for the two above.

Optilang, just out of curiosity, why do use audience for fashion show but spectators for beauty pageant? I just feel they should belong to the same category but I don't have a good reason other than they are related to pretty chicks

To be honest I would use either audience or spectators for a fashion show.

I was in the audience at a fashion show.
I was a spectator at a fashion show.

Both sound good to me.
