Do we say:

(a) One of the audience clap / claps loudly.

(b) The audience claps / clap loudly.

Which is the best answer in British English?

I would go for 'claps' for both, as the audience member is singular and so is the the audience.

Well, 'audience' is a collective noun, so it could go either way, singular or plural. I think that because the audience claps in unison -- all the members do the exact same thing -- the singular form will work (claps).
