Attributive clause

I have an example of the sentence derived from a longer text.

Tom Newman, "a director" of the movie..., claims... or "the director" of the movie as I refer to a person previously mentioned in the text.


I wonder what is the difference between other sentence Tom is a director of the movie ... or simply Tom is a film director.
