attribute, property

Lately I came to know that both the two words can be used to mean "characteristic", which is quite alien to me. Can someone kindly elaborate this usage to me?

Attribute - as a verb, this means to regard something as belonging to. So, 'an attribute' is some thing that is seen as belonging to a thing. I think there is some emphasis on the fact that someone has this opinion about the thing.

Just my personal opinion:

I think attribute can be more often used on people

eg:

flexibility and mobility are the key attributes of the army.

that is: a prosperity is an inhernet charactaristc

while an attribute may be something gained after training
