Please help me understand the meaning of attested. I see it's being used in dictionary definitions a lot.
attest: [verb] establish or verify the usage of;
"This word is not attested until 1993"
Does it mean
1. we didn't verify the usage of the word until 1993. Started from 1993, we began look into it.
or
2. we now have established the fact that people started using this word in 1993?
I would say it like ths:
The usage of the word is not attested to have been using starting from 1993.
