attend or attend to

Hello,
Do shop assistants attend/attend to customers? I have seen both, but I have been told to use "attend to". What do you think?

"Attended to customers."

Actually, Gene93, I think "attended customers" can be said, too, now that I am thinking about it. You can also use "tend" in this context.

Both are possible, but "attend to" is the more popular by far when the subject is helping shoppers.

But it would be "tend to the customers" or both can be used again?

Both are legitimate, but I would prefer "tended to". But that's just me.
