A/the/nil short notice

I just saw an email for a swap request which said "sorry for the short notice".
is "the" correct in the context and is "notice" a countable or non countable?
How do we know and which meaning of it is used here?

The writer of the email is apologising for not giving people more time to reply, and "sorry for the short notice" is a perfectly acceptable idiomatic way to say this. It´s better not to over-analyse idioms, as they are not always logical!
