A/the Wassermann test

Hi, I'd like to ask about article use in the following sentence:

1. The patient was sent to a clinic, where staff administered the Wassermann test."

1. The patient was sent to a clinic, where staff administered a Wassermann test."

Which article is right? It's a medical test and is mentioned for the first time.

Here's my take: "the" seems natural if the speaker refers to this test as a general (one-entity) test (there's only one kind of Wassermann test).

But "a Wassermann test" can also be natural if the speaker conceives of this as a single instance of the test (there can be many instances of the test). So either can works, I think. Does this make sense?

Yes, I agree with you. I'd add that using the indicates that the writer assumes the reader is familiar with the test.
