A/the red helmet

Hi. I am describing someone on a motorbike.
I couldn't see the biker's face; I couldn't see much except for a/the red helmet on his head.
Could you tell me please: is "a red helmet" incorrect? (The helmet is introduced for the first time here.) I think "the" is fine and preferable because even if I have not mentioned it before, it is clear which red helmet I'm referring to: The one on his head.
But I think "a red helmet" is correct too, since I am mentioning it for the first time, am I right? Thank you.
