Hi, can a native speaker clarify the following for me?
The dictator entered the bathroom and sat on a gold-plated toilet.
Can I use the indefinite article as shown to introduce this noun for the first time? Yes, every bathroom contains a toilet (so "the toilet"). However, very few are gold-plated, so I think the indefinite article is appropriate (although the definite article would be as well - the reader will assume that the only toilet that is there happens to be gold-plated). Are these correct assumptions? Thank you.
Yes
