A/the barber shop

Hi,
I am off to a barber shop!
I am off to the barber shop!

If no barber shop was mentioned, is there a different between the article usage in these examples?

When I'm going to get my hair cut, I say to my wife (in BrE) "I'm going to the barber's". She assumes it's the one I usually go to. I would never say "I'm going to/off to a barber's".
