A/the and animals

Hello.
I have a question about articles and names of animals.
I think we use 'the' in such examples:
(the + singular countable noun to talk about a type of animal)
1. The giraffe is the tallest of animals.
With names of species/breeds :
2. The boa is a snake.
3. The Blue Tit
4. The Red Panda
I have seen such sentences in an exercise on pronouns:
5. "There were many dogs in the park. One dog was _a__ Dalmatian."
6. "_An_ owl is _a bird."

I am confused. Could you explain when we use the/a with names of animals?
Thank you in advance.

You can use 'the' when you are speaking of the race or species, but you needn't; otherwise, use 'a' for an individual of the species unless you are speaking of a specific or previously mentioned one.
