Grammar

a/the

Hi
Please help me with this
"Once there lived a bird on the branch of a tree."
This is the first sentence of a story in a book.
My question: Why is it the before branch?
Can't we use a there?

Top answer

'The' seems odd there. I'd use 'a' for branch, too.
