At vs in the back of the class?

Hi, everyone.

Would someone help me understand the meaning of these two sentences?

He was sitting in the back of the class as an observer.

He was sitting in the back of the class as an observer.

They look exactly the same to me.

Perhaps one should be '... at the back of the class'.

This is better than '... in the back'.

'He' could be a student teacher/head teacher/school inspector watching a lesson to see that the teacher was doing the job properly and that the students were learning stuff.
