At this point

Hello,

I would like to ask you why "at this point" was used in this sentence:

"At this point, we didn't know what to think or do. We had lost everything that gave us a reason to continue our ministry."

I'm asking about this because I was taught that this expression means "now". Does it have another meaning?

Thank you

Yes, the expression can apply to a past or future time, but you have to change "this" to "that."

"At that point,..."
