A is an authority in his area of expertise, and travels to places to gives speeches and hold seminars. People who go to his appearances want to use the opportunities to ask him questions...

Is that because adding "at this opportunity" to that sentence will sound as if A is superior, or higher up than everyone else?

It sounds like he thinks he is, yes. But mostly it just sounds like blather—nobody enjoys listening to more words than necessary unless it is poetry.
