Vocabulary

at the sea = by the sea ?

Hello!

Could you help me, please? Am I right to think that to be by the sea and to be at the sea is the same? I mean, is it the same to say "this summer we were by the sea / at the sea" if the idea is to be at the seaside? Thank you!

Maria D Am I right to think that to be by the sea and to be at the sea is the same? There is a subtle difference between the two, to my ears: "By the sea" is more about location/geography, while "at the sea" is what you are trying to say. So: This summer we were at the sea .

At the seashore is more natural.

"at sea" means you are in a ship away from the land.
