"at the school / at school"
I have found out "at / in school" can express "inside the school building" in Longman dictionary, so this is different from what I have learned so far. I have learned that the meaning of "in school and in the school" is different because of the article "the" but as well it says the meaning of "church" with or without "the" is different as I have known. However, I have seen many people in TV shows saying "at church" ,meaning "at the church building".
I am really confused now. I will make my question simpler. So nowadays nouns such as school, church can be used in the same context whether there is "the"or not in causal or spoken English? Or it is just broken expressions?
