Vocabulary

at the end of a year

Hi teachers,

Does it mean a year had passed? If it is, it wouldn't be Dec 31st, the last day of a year.

Thanks

A year has passed, but not necessarily starting from January 1st. If I tell you that an hour has passed, it does not mean from noon or midnight, does it?

Hi Mister Micawber,

Maybe I'm confused.

In English do you have 'at the end of the year'? And if you have, does it mean 'December 31'. I think when I was selling clothes I heard my coworker say something 'at the end of the financial year'. Is this a standard phrase?

Thanks

Yes, at the end of the calendar year is December 31st; at the end of the fiscal year is (well, this varies) March 31st or June 30th or December 31st; at the end of the year can well be December 31st, but it is not in this sentence: At the end of the year I had failed every subject,
