Vocabulary

At the barber shop

Hi,
I am already familiar with different term for hairstyles and colors. But, I really have no idea how to ask a barber for a certain haircut. I would like to know how a natural conversation flows between a barber and costumer. For instance, how can I ask my barber for a hair cut like in the picture (please see the link). What would you say to him? What other questions might he ask you while cutting your hair, about sideburns, etc..? Please don't write something like "show him a picture or so". I really want to learn and I believe this what this website is for. Thank you.

Well, I don't go to a barber shop; I go to a beauty shop.

They have piles and piles of fashion magazines that you can use to pick the style you like.

But there are only a few things that you can say when you get your hair cut:

I'd like my hair short on the side, tapering down to the face, and long in the back.
I want bangs (opposite- I want my hair brushed back awa

Thank you, AlpheccaStars! When you say "Just trim it a quarter inch or so." does it mean that your hair length after it has been cut will be a quarter inch, or this is what the barber will be taking off your hair? Please correct my question as well. Thanks again.

That's how much you want the barber to take off. You want him to leave a quarter inch.
