at supper or for supper?

Just now I had an argument with a friend. He said, "I ate chicken at supper." But I think that sentence sounds odd.
I said, "I ate chicken for supper "is the correct one. What is the difference between those two sentences? Are they both acceptable?

I'd say either is acceptable, but "for" is slightly more expected, to me.

Think of "at" as meaning "at the meal we call supper" and "for" as meaning "the food that I consumed."

Some days it seems that we are all running in little circles around one another, but you can't say it doesn't make life interesting -- especially for the students, who get many points of view on the same topics -- always great for learning!!!
