So a few days ago some 50 swedish police officers stormed the place where they have their servers and took 'em away to search for illegal material. Of course this wouldn't be the last thing that happened. The after math was that some thousends or more people started to attack the police website and the goverments website and to the point that they went down or crashed... So called "digital tsunamis". This is now under investigation by the swedish "undercover" police force called SÄPO (could be translated into: Police of Security in Sweden). Now, The Pirate Bay is also up again using a different server. Everything was backed up so there were minor problem getting it up again. So all in all they just lost a few days of down time.
But more are at stake here, if you look at the bigger picture that is. Some day ago there was a small political demonstration against the police- and govermental action against the pirate bay. Not more than a few hundred joined it. But they got headlines... Also, many political organizations (youth organizations) have been seen on the TV debating why it was wrong to take down the pirate bay and against our minister of juridication. A political party in Sweden called "The Pirate Party" is trying to get into the swedish parliment. A lot of people have joined this party and more will in the future.
Both options have their flaws. Offer people reasons to not pirate will only convert a relative few people, since most piraters don't care about the legality now and won't then. But punishing people for piracy offers multiple problems. Demonstrated by the incident in Sweden, it only incites people. But even if the penalty became so great as to drive off piraters, they would simply go offshore and continue what they do, much the way online gambling functions for those in the US.
1. In the dictionary it says at stake means in danger, I kinda get what it relates to, could anyone further explain it to me or tell me where it orighinate from so I can get a beetter understanding?
2. go offshore = go off their rocker? why offshore?
