At Recess

NYTimes

"Teachers join their pupils at lunch and then have a lunch period of their own while children are at recess."

Could "children are at recess" be an error? I thought one would use "at" for places only, like
"at work", "at home"?

Sounds fine to me. We have a lot of signs around warning drivers to "slow, children at play". It could be an elision, the place where recess is doesn't matter in the giving of information.
