'At night' or 'in the night'

I read this sentence on a website:"I heard a strange noise in the night." I was told that its usually 'at night', so is the sentence correct or wrong?

Thanks.

It is not necessarily incorrect, though you were right in finding it unusual.
Typically, one would use 'at night' as you observed.:
'I work at night'
'Cars often drive down this road at night'
'We hear dogs barking at night'
etc.

'in the night' is kind of borrowing from its opposite. Though we usually say 'at night' we usually say 'in [or during] the day
