At doing vs as I did

Hi,

Which is the correct choice,a or b?

1.'I crossed the room and........a light shone .'

a.as I did so b.at doing so

2.'He is writing .......'

a.with pen b.on paper

I think it's 'a' in 1 and 'b' in 2.I need your answer and justification,please.
