At different times/periods

During his first fifty year, John Brown moved around the country, living at different times in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York. Brown held various jobs and attempted to do business, but never acquired great riches.

Hi,
Is it correct to think of "at different times" in the above as "at different periods?" By the way, is it optional? Thanks.

Not optional; it adds colour. 'Periods' seem longer to me than 'times', so I think 'times' is the better choice.
