Hello,

1. They boarded the train at quarter to six o'clock.
I have to correct the above sentence. I know that "o'clock " is not required here.

But I want know that-
2. They boarded the train at quarter to six.
3. They boarded the train at a quarter to six.
Which one is correct 2 or 3?
Thanks.

I'm not sure we can give you an exact answer. Personally, I think #3 sounds better.

Both are correct. Choose the one you prefer and let us know what your teacher's answer is, OK?

In grade school (1940's) we were taught that #3 is lower register, and should be avoided. - A.

Actually, Google has them pretty close:

#2 - 94,800
#3 - 85,100

#2 is definitely correct.
