As/While

Hi
I was wondering: which is better (if any)? (the meaning I'm looking for is: "When I was...")
1) AS a tourist in Zambia, I also used to work as an English teacher.
2) WHILE a tourist in Zambia....

Thanks.

I was especially interested in the "as a" form. It appears then that you can only use it in phrases such like this (to introduce an opinion): "As a former tourist in Zambia, I suggest you don't go there". And not as a substitute for "When I was".
