Astonish

" to surpirse somebody very much"

This is the definition of 'astonish' I brought from my dictionary

We put very, far etc to accentuate a verb. ex) I was very surprised.

Then what about the case of 'astonish'?; because it already pertains the emphasis "very", no special emphasis is needed? ex) I was really astonished or I was astonished much

Why not? Sometimes/oftentimes you may even hear "the very best" even though the word best doesn't really need any modifiers.
