assume / suppose

Teachers, anyone would tell me what's the difference in the meanings of these two verbs, assume and suppose, please?

They seem to mean the same to me: to guess or to think.

Ex) "A sign, she assumed, of affection."

Ex) "He has a face that she supposed had caused the girls in his highg school to sigh into their pillows at night."

You're right, since the verbs 'assume' and 'suppose' are synonyms here -- they both have the sense of 'think' or 'believe'.

"Assume" can also have the meaning of "to take on / adopt": He assumed the position of department head last week.
