Hi.

1. Should we use a definite or indefinite article here?

You all have to write essays. The/an essay should be a page long, about 500 words.

2. Should we hyphenate the words?

Keep it up to date.

Make it student centered.

3. Is a past tense after a present perfect tense correct?

They have searched every place they could get to and came up empty.

3) I would use the simple past - They searched..... since it means that the action is complete (they finished searching). If they are continuing the search, I would say something like this:

They have searched every place they could get to and, so far, have come up

Does the modal "could" indicate the present possibility or the past of the modal "will" to indicate a past action?

One more example:

He has done all he could.
