associate you guys doing comedies together

At 2:18, Stephen said, "And I don't necessarily associate you guys doing comedies together."

Does this sound natural?

What happened to the "associate A with B" construction?

If you listen on, you'll see Russell Crowe repeats the same construction himself.
"That's why you wouldn't associate us doing comedies together."

If that's not natural, how come he repeats it himself?

Also, if this is not natural, how would you say it naturally? (Perhaps with the inclusion of "with")

Who knows? What reasons can you think of? Was he high on drugs? Was he trying to make Stephen look good by repeating the mistake as if it were not a mistake? Is he just as clueless about using English as Stephen is? Your guess is as good as mine.
