Aspects in main clause

I understand a verb in a subordinate clause in the past perfect shows that particular verb happened before the verb in the main clause.

But what if the past perfect is in the main clause?

Is the aspect of the verb in this main clause determined by when it happens in relation to the verb in the subordinate clause or in relation to the context as a whole (perhaps a paragrah)?

I had walked home, before I ate dinner.

Thanks

I would presume it was used because of the greater context; if not, it should be changed. )

It might be either one.
