1. Does it say that a lot of area around Lexington had changed



2. "in perfect security" - does it mean that they didn't fight (hadn't fought) with each other or that a man didn't hunt (hadn't hunt) for them until he settled in that area?

1. OK, I understand that the appearance had changed. But to be more accurate it says that a great deal of land (considerable distance) around Lexington had changed its appearance, right? Yes

2. "a dozen years before" - does it mean over ten years before? Yes. A dozen means 12.
