aspect in the comparative cluase

Cancer specialists are now looking almost as hard for better ways to combat physical and psychological sufferings as they <are/do> for a cure of the disease itself.

I know that "are" is possible here.

But how about "do"? Would it be natural to put "do" there? Or even possible?

Thanks! Could you please explain why it's not even possible?

Because it sounds awful. It is not parallel.

...specialists are now looking almost as hard for better ways...as they are [looking] for a cure ...
