Aspara Gus – 8 Final “Logical Punctuation” Questions
These are the last, final "logical punctuation questions". I do appreciate your spin on these. No recasts, please. I will be saving this as a future reference guide.
I say that number 1 below is correct, logically, with the .’” ending. If it is, would you personally put a space between the ending single and double quote marks, ie .’ ”
1. Mike said, “I heard Nancy say, ‘Make sure to finalize the project by Friday.’”
2. Mike said, “I heard Nancy say, ‘Make sure to finalize the project by Friday’.”
3. The questions “Will he go?”, “Did he like it?”, “What was his motive?” and “Is he guilty?” were not answered.
{Would you use the serial comma here? I didn't. And would you personally use commas between the questions as I did?}
4. The proverbs “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, “The pen is mightier than the sword”, “Strike while the iron is hot” and “Cut from the same cloth” are used commonly by many people.
{Commas outside okay as exemplified? Omit serial comma as I've done?}
5. The sentences “I wish I had a carbonated beverage”, “I have an awesome new cell phone”, “Oxymorons are figures of speech” and “Do as I say, not as I do” are good ones.
{Commas outside okay as exemplified in this one too? Omit serial comma as I've done?}
6. The exclamatory sentences “Have fun storming the castle!”, “Here's another mess you've gotten me into!”, “If only God would give me some clear sign!” and “Let's go before they light the torches!” were used as examples in the new stylebook.
{Would you use the serial comma here? I didn't. And would you personally use commas between the exclamatory sentences as I did?}
7. I didn't like her “Where are you going?”, “How long will you be out?”, “How many drinks are you going to have?” and “What time are you coming home?” questions.
{I say yes to the punctuation in this one. No serial comma as well here. You concur?}
8. Mike said, “I didn't like her ‘Where are you going?’, ‘How long will you be out?’, ‘How many drinks are you going to have?’ and ‘What time are you coming home?’ questions.”
{Properly punctuated with the single quotes within the double quotes. I think yes.}
Thank you, Aspara Gus.

Logically, it would be Mike said, "I heard Nancy say, ‘Make sure to finalize the project by Friday.’.". but that’s just ludicrous. I like to be as logical as I can without deviating too far from convention, but this is kind of tricky. I think I would prefer #1—without a space between the end single a
