Asking questions....

I know about the inversion to ask open (wh) questions in the grammar... But there's no exception? I mean I want to make a question just with intonation... without inversion. The referred question is:
Why they didn't call you?

I just ask that because it's to a song, and sounds weird to sing "why didn't they call you?" in this song's melody... So, Would be awkward sing "Why they didn't help you?" even with the poetic license...?

In my experience, it's only used as a statement: I don't know why they didn't help you. Why they didn't help you, I have no idea! I can't seem to make it work the way you suggest.

"Why did they not call you?" is OK. Would that fit any better?

Sorry, Anon. I missed the point that you are writing the song.
